With more and more aspects of our everyday lives happening in and around the internet, data centers have become a critical part of the United States’ information infrastructure. As population and demand continue to grow, so does the amount of energy that data centers are consuming – has a major impact to the cost of running them and to the environment.
There are about 3 million data centers in the United States… that’s 1 data center for every 100 people.
In 2013, data centers accounted for more than 2% of all U.S. electricity use.
Most data centers are housed in small-and medium-sized businesses. Larger data centers make up less than 10% of the server market.
10% of the federal government’s electricity use goes to data centers.
50% of the energy supplied to a typical data center is used in the cooling and power infrastructure.
Imagine....
If all data centers had been 20% more efficient, the U.S. could have saved 20 billion kWh between 2013 and 2020 – that’s roughly $2 billion in cost savings.
